Personal Statement

My research interests are at the intersection of engineering (biomedical imaging systems, biophotonics, and artificial intelligence) and physiology (cardiovascular and neuromuscular biomechanics) for studying human health, aging, and performance.

My primary research focuses on the development and application of integrative intelligent imaging and biosensor systems for quantitatively assessing cardiovascular function and neuromuscular control, with an emphasis on biophotonic imaging (i.e., light-based technologies) and artificial intelligence. I have developed end-to-end integrative systems for assessing four fundamental systems: heart, lungs, tissue, and brain. I have published 43 refereed journal and conference papers, delivered 34 presentations across 3 countries, submitted 2 patents in domestic and international markets, and supervised 21 undergraduate and graduate students. My research has been publicly recognized through international Press.

I love teaching. I have taught both medium-large (140) and small (50) engineering classes through my 2 sessional instructor positions ("class relationship:" 4.75/5; teaching evaluation available upon request), 7 teaching assistant positions (Teaching Assistantship Excellence Award; mean 9.75/10 eval), 6 guest lectures, and co-authored a course textbook used by 3 undergraduate software programming courses. I received strong teaching practicum evaluations toward my Certificate in Fundamentals of University Teaching.

I have received a number of Awards and recognitions, including scholarly awards (e.g., Alumni Gold Medal, Alexander Graham Bell Canadian Graduate Scholarship, Graduate Student Award in Technology and Aging), fellowships (e.g., NSERC PDF, Computational Biophotonics Research Fellowship, Carl Pollock Postgraduate Fellowship), and communication awards (e.g., Sandford Fleming Foundation Teaching Assistantship Excellence Award, Best Presentation, Best Demonstration).
